The first session is called an intake session, and your psychologist or counsellor will typically ask questions about you and your life. This information helps us to make an initial assessment of your situation so that therapy can be tailored appropriately. Questions may centre on:
- Reasons for seeking therapy. Often there's a particular issue or issues that lead you to seek counselling. We need to have an understanding of the surface issues before we can start looking at the deeper problems.
- Personal history and current situation. Family, work, and general day-to-day situations play an important role in who we are and how we respond to the world.
- Your current symptoms. Your psychologist will explore whether your issue is contributing to other symptoms of your problem. For example, someone experiencing stress in the workplace might also find that their sleep patterns have changed.
